Cheap Slices and More at New York Pizza Palace

If history is any indication, New York Pizza Palace won’t be around much longer. In fact, the owners — had they done their research — probably should have avoided this spot at Arapaho and Monfort, which has seen many restaurants fail over the years.
But New York Pizza Palace has something going for it that just may help it beat the curse: good pizza at a reasonable price. I visited them for lunch one Friday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised.
If you are looking for a good lunch special, this place has a couple of options worth your consideration: two slices plus a drink for $3.99 or two slices, a salad, plus a drink for $6.99. I chose the $6.99 lunch special for the extra roughage.

The salad bar (with iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, olives, pepperoncini, onions, etc.) was nothing fancy; however, it was fresh and served its purpose. I appreciated the Greek dressing.
Most certainly exceeded were my expectations of the pizza. I received the same quality pizza as I’ve come to expect from my favorite Dallas pizza joints (i.e. Joe’s, Besa’s, and Carmine’s).
To my delight, the sauce was not overly sweet as is typically the case at most pizza chains and at least one venerable Dallas pizza institution that comes to mind. Combine this near-perfect sauce with mozzarella and a thin, slightly crispy crust, and you have one of the finer slices in town.
In addition to pizza, you can choose from various salads, calzones, subs, wings, Italian dinners, and desserts. I fully intend to pick up a pie on my way home from work one of these days; eggplant and fresh garlic as toppings sound good to me. Hopefully, New York Pizza Palace sticks around for a while.
