Detroit-Style Pizza: Better than Your Favorite Pizza Since 1946

There are only three types of American-born pizza that need to exist: New York, Chicago…and Detroit. You probably haven’t heard of the last one – it’s high time for a change.

Detroit-style pizza has yet to be discovered on a national level, especially when compared to its two age-old rivals. Both deserve their fame, but both have tragic flaws. Deep-dish Chicago-style often resembles lasagna over actual pizza (sorry, utensils), and thin-crust New York-style can leave you unsatisfied no matter how much you inhale.

Detroit-style pizza? Not a complaint in sight.

My Best of Dallas 2012

As 2012 nears its end, I thought I’d take some time to reflect upon the things I most appreciate about Dallas — a personal ‘best of’ list if you will. Bear in mind, my world is very small these days with a 2 year old, a wife, and a day job, so my list might seem pretty modest compared to yours.

Klyde Warren Park Opens Its Figurative Doors In Style

I’ve been to my fair share of urban parks, but there’s something special about being on top of a highway. Surrounded by familiar skyscrapers, a glance northeast or southwest gives you a strange idea of what’s speeding underneath you. Klyde Warren Park opened with a bang this weekend (literally, there were fireworks), and thousands came out to get a glimpse of the optimistic connector between downtown and uptown.

Big Tex State Fair 2012

Please, Oh Please, Don’t Change Big Tex

The past 24 hours have been pretty rough on Dallas culture enthusiasts and the general aura of State Fair nostalgia. North Texas is collectively bummed out after watching Big Tex meet his fiery end, but talks of his 2013 return are already underway.

Every city is guilty of this in some way, but Dallas can be quick to jump the gun in the name of progression. Sometimes it pans out (i.e. Klyde Warren Park — hopefully), but often it does not (i.e. Downtown Tunnels).

Enter our crispy buddy Big Tex. It was a given that Tex would be rebuilt, but how he will return leaves quite a bit to the imagination.

Punishing Mosquitoes (and Humans) with an Iron Fist

One way or another, Dallasites with the slightest feeling of uncertainty toward West Nile Virus aerial spraying will find out anti-spray efforts have been thwarted, crushed, and often ignored outright by city officials.

Multiple interviews with commissioners have revealed little to no understanding of the science behind the aerial spray. They’ve sat through an endless loop of local media interviews, parroting the same “scientific” blanket statements every time. You’ll never get a surefire declaration of safety, instead cover-ups of “well, we haven’t noticed any ill effects” or “scientists haven’t detected any abnormalities”. When asked if the spray would affect children or pregnant women, one spokesperson replied with a textbook response about studies looking promising. Comforting!
